Statue of Edward Colston is toppled in Bristol

Protesters pull down a statue of 17th-century slave trader Edward Colston and throw it into the River Avon during a Black Lives Matter demonstration in Bristol. This sparks a period of direct action taken towards statues and monuments in the UK. While some organisations decide to remove objects under their jurisdiction, there are also instances of far-right groups self-organising to guard some monuments. Colston's statue is removed from the river by the City Council four days later, and goes on display in 2021 at Bristol’s M Shed museum with its newly gained dents and markings.
