Historic England updates its checklist for local authorities on contested heritage
After an increased interest in contested heritage, Historic England redefines it as ‘historic objects, structures, buildings or places where the associated stories or meanings have become challenged’. This is an amendment from the wording that previously designated contested heritage as ‘historic objects, buildings or places whose received or conventional narratives are currently challenged’. It also updates its checklist to state that statues’ collective value derives from ‘representing our collective past’, and emphasises the ‘retain and explain’ model as part of an advisory process.
