Historic England publishes initial statement on contested heritage

Historic England, the government's adviser on the historic environment, makes its first official statement on the topic of contested heritage, encouraging responses that ‘in most cases … do not lead to removal or significant alteration’. They say that ‘harm or loss to a heritage asset can only be justified when outweighed by public benefit’ and announce further advisory guidance to be published later in the year.
