Stroud District Council publishes the results of the public consultation. 79% of respondents felt the Blackboy Clock should be removed, 59% felt it should be in a museum, and 22% felt it should remain in situ.
The Review Panel’s subsequent recommendations include: ‘The Council consult with the legal owner of the statue and the clock to secure its removal. If listed building consent is received and the statue and clock removed, the statue and clock is offered to The Museum in the Park collection.’ The panel also recommends that Blackboy House be renamed, with a contextualising information plaque installed outside, and the Anti-Slavery Arch restored.
Of the 1,680 survey responses, 216 came from people with no connection to the district, highlighting the wider interest in the clock. The words most frequently used by respondents to describe the clock include ‘uncomfortable’, ‘ashamed’, ‘angry’ and ‘saddened’.
