Blackboy Clock restoration costs are investigated
Ramon R. Willey, warden of the Stroud Teachers’ Centre, requests a quote for restoring the clock. This comes to £496 (approximately £6,090.98 in today’s money), including £74.80 (today £908.73) for ‘repairing striking jack’. In a cover letter to the Gloucestershire Education Committee, assistant education officer A. Garnham describes the clock as being ‘a unique piece of Gloucestershire history’ and of ‘national historic interest’.
Around this time, Willey self-publishes two editions of a text called ‘The Black Boy School Stroud 1844 – 1914’ to publicise the history of the building. Both editions include a chapter dedicated to the history of the clock and stress the need for its restoration.
